Wilkes University invites qualified applicants for the position of Public Safety Officer in the Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety is responsible for providing the Wilkes University community with a safe and healthful environment in which to work, live and learn. The department is service oriented and specializes in meeting the safety and security needs of an urban college setting.  

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Protecting life and property within Wilkes University facilities and buildings on campus.
  • Officers patrol the campus and respond to calls for service, in all weather conditions, for service by vehicle, bicycle, and foot 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week/ 365 days per year.
  • Enforce campus parking regulations.
  • Providing emergency first aid and/or requesting other medical services as needed.
  • Assisting with traffic detail and crowd control during special events;
  • Observing and reporting malfunctioning or unsafe utility equipment, access devices, and alarms throughout campus.
  • Attending professional skills development courses provided within the department and by outside agencies to strengthen capabilities taught during the police academy and to develop new skills over the course of a career.
  • Officers may be called to testify in court as witnesses.
  • Officers may be called to provide security escort services for students and employees as requested;
  • Officers perform a variety of service related functions during a shift (i.e. admitting individuals access to locked buildings after hours)
  • Officers will be expected to exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • In the performance of their duties, officers will communicate via radio and provide information to the public.
    • On a daily basis, officers will write detailed, concise, and accurate reports about stressful situations that are often times complex and confusing.
    • Investigate incidents and write reports.  

Public Safety Officer positions involve regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations necessary to provide emergency and non-emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year (weekends and holidays included).Work shifts are normally eight (8) hours in duration but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, staffing shortage, workload or work-in-progress. High percentage of attendance, on-time arrival to work and ability to work overtime when necessary are required.  

Public Safety Officers are required to participate in on-going job-related training and development activities. Act 120 certified Public Safety Officers will be required to fire passing scores with their departmentally issued firearms on an approved course and maintain passing scores on requalification. 

Minimum qualifications: Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent. Relevant training and 2-3 years relevant work experience in law enforcement and/or security. Act 120 Certification, Valid PA Driver's License, and CPR./AED Certification within 6 months. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
