Wilkes University invites applications for a full-time High Performance Computing System Administrator in the College of Science and Engineering. This individual will be primarily responsible for aiding in the deployment, maintenance, and management of CSE's new high-performance computer cluster.  The ideal candidate would be an individual who is eager to work in an academic environment and share the goal of establishing CSE as a regional center for excellence in high performance computing.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Perform system administration tasks for the new HPC cluster such as:
    • Work with vendors to implement operating system, firmware, and hardware enhancements as needed to maintain and enhance operation of the cluster.
    • Install, maintain, configure, and integrate HPC software.
    • Work with CSE faculty to plan and execute policies for cluster usage.
    • Maintain documentation for cluster usage and maintenance.
    • Work with university faculty and staff to troubleshoot and optimize cluster performance
  • Act as a point of contact with the university IT department for the maintenance of other specialized high-performance computing hardware and software used within the CSE.
  • Aid faculty in deploying outreach and educational activities involving high performance computing

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, or a related field.
  • High proficiency with Unix-based operating systems, command line usage, and scripting.
  • Experience with systems administration including file systems, hardware configuration, account management, and network configuration.
  • Experience with one of more of the following: cluster job scheduling, container deployment and management, virtualization, performance optimization, high performance computing paradigms (OpenMP, MPI, CUDA/OpenCL, Hadoop, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience writing technical documentation and communicating technical information to a diverse array of colleagues.
  • A desire to work in an academic environment and an understanding of the culture of research and pedagogy.
  • 3+ years of system administration experience (ideally in distributed or high performance computing), is preferred but entry-level candidates will be considered if they can provide strong evidence of the desire and ability to quickly learn the idiosyncrasies of HPC system administration (through a personal statement, strong references, relevant internship or capstone experience, etc.)
